Understanding the Link Between Chemicals and Cancer
Chemicals can impact the development of cancer.
Carcinogens, have been shown to cause changes to the DNA inside our cells, which can lead to cancer. Chemicals can either directly damage DNA or interfere with the way cells grow and divide.
Some chemicals can directly damage the DNA in our cells, leading to mutations. When these mutations accumulate, they can cause cells to grow uncontrollably, a characteristic of cancer.
Other chemicals, like endocrine disruptors (e.g., BPA or chemical based pesticides), can interfere with the body’s hormonal systems. This disruption can lead to hormone-related cancers, like breast or prostate cancer.
Chronic exposure to some chemicals can lead to long-term inflammation, which is linked to cancer. Inflammation can create an environment where cells are more likely to become cancerous.
There are other chemicals which weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to identify and destroy cancer cells. When the immune system isn’t functioning properly, the body may not be able to combat abnormal cells.
The risk from chemicals depends on factors like exposure duration, concentration, and individual susceptibility, but avoiding harmful chemicals by choosing natural, biodegradable products is a positive step toward reducing the overall cancer risk.
