20 MAY: WORLD BEE DAY

World Bee Day is to raise awareness about bee conservation and not just a day to admire these buzzing beauties.  It’s a day to celebrate and recognise the vital role bees play in our ecosystems and food production and understand that bees are an integral part to sustainable living; are important to our livelihood as they help to pollinate plants and crops we, and many farm animals eat.

However, bee populations are under threat due to the destruction of their natural habitat, intensive farming practices and the use of pesticides. This is driving the decline in both the number and diversity of bees.

• Without bees, our food security is at risk

There are thousands of species of bee that exist globally.  Native bees have co-evolved with our unique native flora over thousands of years. Some species of plant can only be pollinated by a particular species of bee and in the absence of pollination, the plant species cannot reproduce.

• Without bees, biodiversity is at risk

Bees are keystone species that play a vital role in preserving ecosystem health. Bees provide essential pollination services for plants.  Maintaining plant diversity supports other essential s which in turn help to regulate climate, purify air and water, create healthy soil and recycle nutrients.

• Without bees, ecosystems are at risk

It is imperative to encourage bee-friendly habitats; support bee conservation efforts; plant bee-friendly flowers, reduce pesticide use, use 100% plant-based, green products which do not harm nature and support local beekeepers and honey producers.
