This column offers tips on how you can easily make a positive environmental impact simply by changing day-to-day habits.

In our daily lives, we often overlook the small changes we could make to be more environmentally conscious. These changes may seem insignificant, but when multiplied by the millions of people making the same small mistakes, they can have a significant impact on our environment.

In this article, I will discuss an age-old practice: boiling an egg.
It’s something we all do, yet many of us have not considered the environmental impact of this habit and how we can change it to benefit the environment.

Traditional vs. Improved Egg Boiling Method

Traditionally, boiling an egg involves bringing water to a boil, dropping in the egg, boiling for a specific duration based on culinary desire, turning off the stove, and then removing the egg. However, years ago, I marveled at the seemingly wasteful energy consumption of this method and wondered if I could boil an egg using the residual heat in the pot once the stove was switched off and the original egg taken out. To my surprise, it worked! I could even an entire pot filled with eggs and boiling them all using the latent heat in the pot and this led me to develop my new egg boiling method.

New Egg Boiling Method

For my method, I put the eggs in cold water, bring it to a boil, switch off the stove, and leave the eggs in the pot for 20 minutes (adjusting for desired outcome). This allows me to achieve the same result using the minimum amount of energy.

Environmental Impact

Collectively, by changing our egg boiling habits to use less energy, we can prevent tons of coal from entering the environment. It’s a small change that can have a big impact.

Conclusion

Becoming an environmental champion does not require drastic measures. Sometimes, all it takes is to adopt better habits. So why not take responsibility for our actions and strive to be more environmentally conscious in our choices?
