Protecting Our Health by Protecting Our Planet: The Vital Connection Between Environment and Well-being
This day is dedicated to raising awareness about critical health issues facing the world and the environment which sustains good health.
The environment plays such a critical role in sustaining good health, not only referring to access to healthcare, but also the environment we live in. Clean air, water, and soil, safe food, and a stable climate are all essential for maintaining good health. It’s why addressing environmental issues like pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss are so closely tied to public health.
Some actions we can take as individuals and as a community to protect both the environment and our health might include:
- Reducing air pollution which has direct benefits for respiratory health by using clean energy and driving less.
- By recycle – reuse – refill – and supporting sustainable product choices, we contribute to a healthier planet by creating less waste, less pollution and better health outcomes for communities.
- Choosing organic and locally grown foods reduces the exposure to harmful pesticides and supports a healthier, more biodiverse ecosystem.
- Spending more time outdoors, in nature and green spaces provide physical and mental health benefits, reduces stress, and boosts overall well-being whilst improving air quality.
- Safe, clean water is foundational for health. Being mindful of water usage and supporting clean water initiatives can make a huge difference.
World Health Day serves as a pivotal moment to reflect on the health challenges that continue globally. The day provides an invaluable opportunity for everyone to support effective, sustainable health policies and practices.
The theme for 2025 is for all individuals and communities to have access to the health services they need without suffering financial hardship, particularly for the most vulnerable and marginalized populations; to create awareness and action on living healthy lifestyles to prevent disease and improve quality of life and to support the development of resilient health systems; achieving Sustainable Development for Good Health and Well-being.
Whilst we cannot possibly address these all, the main issues at hand are making the right choices when it comes to the health of the nation and world at large.
- Be responsible for your own and your family’s health.
- Choose earth-friendly products that do not harm your health or the environment as opposed to chemical-based products that impact negatively on health causing serious and irreversible illnesses, allergies and cancer.
- Educate yourself and your family with regards to staying healthy
- Use only clean water and ensure good sanitation
- Respect nature, both below the water (Oceans) and on land
Ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier environment. Every step, no matter how small, contributes to building a more sustainable and healthier world for everyone.
